Luke 4:1 Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan River. And then the Spirit led him into the desert.
Luke 4:2 The devil tested Jesus for 40 days and tried to tempt Him to do wrong. Jesus had not had any food for 40 days and He was very hungry.
Luke 4:3 The devil said to Jesus: If You are the Son of God, say to these stones that they must change into bread.
Luke 4:4 But Jesus said to The Devil: In the Old Testament it is written: ‘It is not just bread that keeps people alive but by obeying every word of God.
Luke 4:5 Then the devil took Jesus to a high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time
Luke 4:6 The devil said to Jesus: I will make you king over all these places. You will have power over them, and you will get all the glory. It has all been given to me. I can give it to anyone I want
Luke 4:7 You must just worship me, then You will have it all.
Luke 4:8 But Jesus said to the devil: get behind me. In the Old Testament it is written: You must worship the Lord your God and serve only Him.
Luke 4:9 Then the devil took Jesus into Jerusalem and up to the top of the temple. The devil said to Jesus: If You are the Son of God, then jump down,
Luke 4:10 because it is written in the Old Testament: God will tell his angels to protect You.
Luke 4:11 They will hold You in their hands, so that You will not hurt your foot on a stone.
Luke 4:12 But Jesus said to the devil: It is also written in the Old Testament: You must not test the Lord your God.
Luke 4:13 After the devil had tempted Jesus to do wrong, he went away for a long time.
Luke 4:14 Jesus went back to Galilee with the power of the Spirit. Stories about him spread all over the area around Galilee.
Luke 4:15 Jesus started to teach them in the synagogues, and everyone said good things about Him.
Luke 4:16 Jesus came to Nazareth, the town where He had lived when He was a child. On the Sabbath day he went to the synagogue as he always did. He stood up to read.
Luke 4:17 They gave Jesus the book of the prophet Isaiah. Jesus opened the book and He read what Isaiah had written. Jesus read:
Luke 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord leads me. The Lord has anointed me. God said I must bring the good news to poor people. God has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to tell the prisoners that they are free, and they can go. He sent me to heal the blind people so they can see again. I must free all the people who are suffering.
Luke 4:19 I must say: Now is the time to announce that the time has come for the Lord to show his kindness.
Luke 4:20 Then Jesus closed the Book, and He gave it back to the person who had to put it away. Jesus sat down and everyone in the synagogue looked at Him.
Luke 4:21 Then Jesus started to talk to the people, and He said: Today God has made these things, what I have read from the Bible, happen.
Luke 4:22 Everyone there said good things about Jesus. They were amazed to hear him speak such wonderful words. They said, “How is this possible? Isn’t he Joseph’s son?
Luke 4:23 But Jesus said to them: Later you will say the words of this proverb to Me: If You are a doctor, then you must heal Yourself. You will also say: They told us of all the miracles that You have done in Capernaum. You must do the same things here in this town.
Luke 4:24 But I tell you: People do not listen to a prophet in the town where his people live.
Luke 4:25 But in truth, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heavens were shut up 3 years and 6 months, and a great famine came over all the land,
Luke 4:26 but the Lord did not tell Elijah to go to one of them. He sent Elijah only to a widow in the town of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
Luke 4:27 And in the time when the prophet Elisha lived, there were a lot of lepers in the land of Israel. But the Lord did not heal all of them. He healed only Naaman, from the land of Syria.
Luke 4:28 Everyone in the synagogue was angry when they heard what Jesus said.
Luke 4:29 They got up and forced Jesus to go out of town. Their town was built on a hill. They took Jesus to the edge of the hill to throw him off
Luke 4:30 But Jesus walked through the crowd of people, and He went away.
Luke 4:31 Jesus went to Capernaum, a town Galilee. Jesus went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day to teach the people.
Luke 4:32 They were amazed at his teaching because he spoke with authority.
Luke 4:33 In the synagogue there was a man who had an evil spirit in him. The spirit shouted loudly and said:
Luke 4:34 Jesus of Nazareth, what do You want to do with us Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to kill us all? I know who You are. You are the holy One of God.
Luke 4:35 But Jesus warned the evil spirit to stop. He said, Be quiet! Come out of the man! The evil spirit threw the man down on the ground in front of everyone. Then the evil spirit left the man and did not hurt him.
Luke 4:36 All the people were surprised, and they said to each other: The words that Jesus says come from God. He tells the evil spirits to go out and they listen to Him and go out.
Luke 4:37 And so the news about Jesus spread to every place in the whole area.
Luke 4:38 Jesus went away from the synagogue, and He went to Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was very sick in bed. The people asked Jesus to help her.
Luke 4:39 e stood very close to her and ordered the sickness to go away. The sickness left her immediately, and she got up and began serving them.
Luke 4:40 When the sun went down, the people started to bring all the sick people to Jesus. Jesus put his hands on everyone, and He healed them.
Luke 4:41 He also chased demons out of many people and the demons shouted: You are the Son of God. The demons knew He was the Christ. That is why Jesus was angry with them and told them to keep quiet.
Luke 4:42 The next morning Jesus went away to desert place. Many people were looking for Him. When they saw Him, they did not want Him to go away from them.
Luke 4:43 But Jesus told them: I must also go to the people in other towns. I must tell them the Good News about God who is King. This is why God sent Me.
Luke 4:44 Then Jesus went to other towns in Galilee and He started to teach the people in the synagogues.
