Exodus Chatper 20

Exodus 20:1 These are the things God told his people:

Exodus 20:2 I am the Lord your God. I have brought you out of Egypt where you were slaves.

Exodus 20:3 You may not worship any other gods. I am the only God.

Exodus 20:4 You must not make any idols. Don’t make any statues or pictures of anything up in the sky or of anything on the earth or of anything down in the water.

Exodus 20:5 Don’t worship or serve idols of any kind, because I, the Lord, am your God. I am jealous when my people worshiping other gods. People who sin against me I will punish their children, their grandchildren, and even their great-grandchildren.

Exodus 20:6 But I will be very kind to people who love me and obey my commands. I will be kind to their families for thousands of gene

rations.

Exodus 20:7 You may not use the name of the Lord your God in a wrong way, because God will punish anyone who uses his name for something that is not right.

Exodus 20:8 You must remember that the Sabbath day is a holy day.

Exodus 20:9 You have 6 days to work and do everything you have to do.

Exodus 20:10 But the 7th day is the Sabbath day of the Lord your God. Then you may not work, not you or your son or daughter or your servant or servant girl, or your animals or strangers who live among you.

Exodus 20:11 The Lord worked for 6 days to make heaven and earth, the sea and everything in it, but on the 7th day He did not work. That is why the Lord has blessed the Sabbath day and said it must be a holy day.

Exodus 20:12 You must honor and respect your father and your mother. Do this so that you will have a full life in the land that the Lord your God gives you.

Exodus 20:13 You may not murder anyone.

Exodus 20:14 You may not commit adultery.

Exodus 20:15 You may not steal.

Exodus 20:16 You may not tell lies about other people.

Exodus 20:17 You may not desire someone’s house or want to have it for yourself. You may not desire someone’s wife, or his servant or servant girl or his ox or his donkey, or anything that belongs to someone else.

Exodus 20:18 During all this time, the people in the valley heard the thundering and saw the lightning on the mountain. They saw smoke rising from the mountain and heard the sound of the trumpet. They were afraid and shook with fear. They stood away from the mountain and watched

Exodus 20:19 The children of Israel said to Moses: Please talk to us, and we will listen to you, but if God speaks to us, we will die.

Exodus 20:20 Then Moses said to them, Do not be afraid! God has come to test you. He wants you to respect him so that you will not sin.

Exodus 20:21The people stood far away from the mountain, but Moses went near to the dark cloud where God was.

Exodus 20:22 The Lord told Moses to tell the children of Israel: You have heard when I have talked to you from heaven.

Exodus 20:23 Do not make idols or gods for yourselves from silver or gold.

Exodus 20:24 Make a special altar for me. You should use dirt to make this altar. Offer sheep and cattle as burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on this altar. Do this in every place where I tell you to remember me. Then I will come and bless you.

Exodus 20:25 If you make an altar for Me from stones, do not use stones that you have cut, because if you cut the stones, then the altar will be impure.

Exodus 20:26 You may not climb up to my altar on steps, because then people will be able to look under your clothes.
