Proverbs 13

1A wise child listens to a father's instruction, but a mocker does not listen to correction.

2A person enjoys good things from the fruit of good words, but the treacherous desire only violence.

3A careful speaker protects that speaker's own life, but a careless talker comes to ruin.

4The lazy person craves things and gets nothing, but the diligent person's desires are fully satisfied.

5A righteous person hates lying, but the wicked bring shame and disgrace.

6Righteousness guards the person of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner.

7Some pretend to be rich but have nothing; some pretend to be poor but have great wealth.

8A person's riches may ransom their life, but a poor person hears no threats.

9The light of the righteous shines brightly, but the lamp of the wicked will be put out.

10Pride only leads to conflict, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.

11Wealth gained dishonestly disappears quickly, but whoever gathers wealth little by little makes it grow.

12Hope delayed makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is like a tree of life.

13Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it, but whoever respects a command will be rewarded.

14The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a person away from the snares of death.

15Good sense wins favor, but the way of the treacherous is hard.

16Every sensible person acts with knowledge, but a fool displays foolishness.

17A wicked messenger brings trouble, but a trustworthy messenger brings healing.

18Poverty and shame come to whoever ignores instruction, but whoever accepts correction will be honored.

19A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but fools hate to turn away from evil.

20Whoever walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

21Trouble follows sinners, but good rewards the righteous.

22A good person leaves an inheritance to that good person's grandchildren, but the wealth of sinners is stored up for the righteous.

23A poor person's field may yield much food, but injustice sweeps it away.

24Whoever spares the rod hates their child, but a loving parent is careful to discipline that child.

25The righteous eat until they are fully satisfied, but the stomach of the wicked goes hungry.
