Old Testament
Psalms 55
O God, please listen to my prayer and don’t look away when I am begging You for help.
Please listen to me and answer me. Let me speak to you and tell you what upsets me.
My enemies shout at me and threaten me. In their anger they attack me. They bring troubles crashing down on me.
My heart beats very fast, and I am afraid that I will die.
I am trembling with fear. I am terrified!
I wish that I had wings like a dove, and then I would fly away to a safe place to rest.
Yes, I would fly away to the desert and stay there. Paulse and Think
I would hurry to go and find a place to hide from the wind and the storm.
My Lord, confuse their words and stop their plans. I see so much cruelty and fighting in this city.
Day and night they walk on the walls around the city. They sin and bring trouble to the people and make them suffer.
There is so much bad in the streets. People who hurt and cheat others are everywhere.
But it was not my enemies who falsely accused me. If it were my enemies, I would understand it. It was not the people who always hated me and who think they are more important than I am. If it were they, I would have hid from them.
But it was someone like me who accused me, the one so close to me, my companion, my good friend, who does this.
We used to share our secrets with one another, as we walked through the crowds together in God’s Temple.
I wish death would take my enemies by surprise! I wish the earth would open up and swallow them alive, because they plan such terrible things together.
But I will call God and ask Him to help me. I know that the Lord will save me.
I cry in the morning, at noon and at night. I pray to God, and He listens to me.
I have fought in many battles, but God has always rescued me and brought me back safely.
God will listen to my prayers and punish my enemies. Paulse and Think They will never change. They don’t fear and respect God.
The person who was my friend has turned against me and betrayed me. He did not keep his promise to me. He broke it.
He said beautiful things, and his words were as smooth as butter, but there was war in his heart. He wanted to do something bad to me. His words were softer than oil but they hurt me like sharp swords.
Give your worries to the Lord and he will care for you. He will never let those who are good be defeated.
But, God, you will send those liars and murderers to the grave. They will die before their life is half finished! As for me, I will put my trust in you.
